Founded in 1962 by Ralph Brumbaugh, Brumbaugh Construction, Inc. embarked on a journey that would see it transform from a residential builder to a multifaceted construction powerhouse in Arcanum, Ohio. This family-owned company has weathered economic challenges and industry changes, emerging as a leader in both bridge and highway construction and commercial projects. From its humble beginnings, Brumbaugh Construction's story is a testament to adaptability, resilience, and a commitment to excellence.

Founding and Early Years

Ralph Brumbaugh laid the foundation for Brumbaugh Construction in 1962 as a residential builder, constructing homes throughout Darke County. Operating in Arcanum, Ohio, the company quickly gained a reputation for quality craftsmanship and attention to detail. As the demand for housing grew, so did the company's expertise and reach.

Diversification in Response to Challenges

The company faced its first significant challenge in the early 1980s when a recession rocked the housing market. Undeterred, Ralph Brumbaugh promoted Scott Myers to partner and entrusted him with leading the Bridge & Highway Division, which focused on bridge repair, bridge construction, and roadway projects. Meanwhile, Kent Myers transitioned his focus from residential construction to lead the Commercial Construction Division.

Divisional Growth and Adaptation

By the mid-1990s, Brumbaugh Construction had phased out residential construction entirely, aligning its focus with two distinct divisions: Bridge & Highway and Commercial Construction. Scott Myers assumed the role of president, overseeing the Bridge & Highway Division, while Kent Myers served as vice president, responsible for the Commercial Construction Division. This strategic shift allowed the company to excel in specialized areas of construction.

In the late 1990s, the company continued to evolve. Ralph Brumbaugh promoted Kent Myers and Dan Hayes to partners, recognizing their contributions to the company's growth. This leadership team set the stage for the company's entry into the new millennium with a desire to expand and innovate.

Expansion and Regional Reach

In the late 1990s, Brumbaugh Construction's growth extended beyond Arcanum, Ohio, to cover the west-central Ohio region, including Dayton and the Greater Dayton Area. This strategic move showcased the company's adaptability and commitment to excellence. By diversifying its reach to the Miami Valley Region, Brumbaugh Construction left an enduring impact, becoming a respected construction leader known for quality and professionalism. This expansion not only marked a turning point in the company's history but also solidified its legacy as a trusted partner in shaping the infrastructure and landscape of multiple communities.

Navigating Challenges with Strong Leadership

The new millennium brought both opportunities and challenges. The mid-2000s marked a period of growth, as key hires like Mike Collins, Joe Raterman, Troy Myers, Jason Willis, and Chris Robinson joined the Brumbaugh team, contributing their skills and expertise. However, the late 2000s saw another significant recession that tested the company's resilience. Through effective leadership and financial management, Brumbaugh Construction weathered the storm and emerged stronger than before.

Growth, Success, and Forward Vision

Entering the 2010s, Brumbaugh Construction continued its upward trajectory. In 2019, the four original owners – Ralph Brumbaugh, Scott Myers, Kent Myers, and Dan Hayes – made a pivotal decision, selling the company to Joe Raterman, Troy Myers, Mike Collins, Jason Willis, and Chris Robinson. This transition marked a new chapter in the company's history, one that was marked by sustained success and a focus on sustainable growth.

The COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 presented unprecedented challenges to businesses worldwide, including Brumbaugh Construction. Yet, the company's commitment to its employees and sound business strategies allowed it to persevere and even thrive in the face of adversity.

Conclusion: A Legacy of Resilience and Inspiration

Brumbaugh Construction's journey from its inception in 1962 to its current position as a leader in bridge and highway construction and commercial projects showcases its remarkable ability to adapt and thrive. The company's founders, along with the subsequent generations of leadership and dedicated employees, have cultivated an environment of resilience, innovation, and growth. With an emphasis on employee development and a commitment to excellence, Brumbaugh Construction, Inc. stands as a beacon of success and inspiration in the construction industry, both in Arcanum, Ohio, and beyond.
